During his career, Rick has represented organizations in various industries, including banking, factoring, telecommunications and nuclear energy  in court and in various forms of alternative dispute resolution.  As the senior litigator in the firm’s Business Restructuring and Bankruptcy group, Rick’s particular emphasis over the years has been on disputes involving creditors’ rights and bankruptcy-related issues.  Rick has advised a number of the firm’s energy trading clients in connection with the bankruptcies of significant participants in the markets for electricity and natural gas, including:  The Power Company of America, Enron Corporation and Mirant Corporation.  These matters involved litigation or negotiations focusing on the provisions of the Bankruptcy Code that govern the treatment of forward contracts and swaps and the valuation of terminated forward contract swaps or options.

Rick also has substantial experience in disputes involving construction or environmental issues and the enforcement of indemnities contained in merger or acquisition agreements.  In recent years, he has represented clients in several arbitration proceedings concerning the completion of projects involving the remediation of radiological contamination in manufacturing facilities.

Prior to joining the firm in 1983, Rick practiced law in Atlanta for 10 years.  He resided in the firm's Atlanta office until 2000, when he relocated to Washington.  Rick currently serves as Partner In Charge of the Washington office.
